I know the guy whose family own Ya Hala! Haha.. The service may not be superior, but I love the family-feel of the restaurant. :)
I've been there once, and the food is great! I can't wait to go and try the vegan options. Mmmmm ethnic food. :D

I find it really cool that although seemingly every Lebanese joint in central Portland is owned by this extended family (at least Nicholas, Habibi, Ya Hala, Hoda's, and Arabian Breeze) they don't do the same thing at each one. Even the simplest things--humus, pita, tabouli, baba ganuj--are different at each.

I like them all, but for me Arabian Breeze (or at least their mezza, pita style, and the inclusion of za'atar) is by far the best. Only been to Ya Hala once in the last year, so I'll need to make it back over the mountain soon. . .

Chelsea - Yes. It's so sad. I had to visit multiple times to verify the taste is not the same. Every time my mouth would water hoping I'd get the smoky baba, but no, it was no fluke - the recipe has changed!

Jeff - Shh! It's one of our secret spots! When I visit Clackamas I visit Milkyway and when I visit SW I visit Wolrd Foods.

If you love Ya Hala like I do, don't forget about Barbur World Foods on SW Barbur and Capitol Highway. It's owned by the same family, so all the food in the deli is the same as the food from Ya Hala. I think it's SW Portland's best kept secret.

I love Ya Hala! Did they really change the baba ghannouj? This is the only place I feel comfortable getting stuffed grape leaves since they only offer the vegan variety. The service can be horrible, but I agree the food is worth it. I'll have to try the eggplant stew and stuffed artichoke hearts sometime.
